At twenty-nine the Bodhisatta leaves his home and goes forth in search of the highest security. Majjhima Nikāya 26 of the Southern tradition and other texts record the Buddha's own account: he was still young, with black hair, in the prime of life; against the wishes of his weeping parents he shaved off his hair and beard, put on the and went forth. The Chinese Mahīśāsaka Vinaya and the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya record instead that the Bodhisatta woke at midnight and saw the palace women sprawled in sleep; the palace seemed to him like a charnel ground, and filled with disgust he ordered his charioteer Channa (the servant who drove the prince's chariot) to saddle his horse and rode out of the city in the night. The going forth, the going forth at twenty-nine and the ride out of the city at midnight are recorded in the texts of every major school. Taishō Canon
