The table of rains retreats in the later commentaries records the Buddha's 18th on Mount Cāliya, the same place as in Year 13. The commentaries of the Southern tradition explain that Cālikā is the name of a city, that the white hill outside it is called Mount Cāliya, and that there is a great monastery on the hill. The table does not record what happened during this retreat.
Different Accounts
The Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing has “again Luoyue city” (again at Rājagaha) for this year, and only in Year 19 has Mount Zheli; whether Mount Zheli is Mount Cāliya cannot at present be determined. Taishō Canon
More differences between accounts (2)
Another commentary on the Vinaya of the Southern tradition says the Buddha spent these three years at Rājagaha.
The attendant Meghiya's wish to go alone to meditate in a mango grove took place near Mount Cāliya, and this year is one of its possible years; see “Events of uncertain year”.
Dating
Year 18 after the Awakening, the Buddha aged fifty-two, during the rains retreat; the year is given by the later commentaries, and only the year is known.
