The Buddha at 14

This section has a single event: the Bodhisatta rides out of the city for pleasure and sees in turn an old man, a sick man, a corpse and a renunciant, and so conceives the wish to go forth. The Chinese Mahīśāsaka Vinaya and the Buddha biography Taizi ruiying benqi jing state that this happened at fourteen, so it stands as a section of its own; most Buddha biographies place it after his marriage, on the eve of his going forth.
