The Chinese Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya says: “For five years after the World-honoured One's awakening, the community of monks was entirely pure; from then on they gradually did wrong, and the World-honoured One laid down rules as each case arose.” That is, for five years after the Awakening the were pure and without fault, and only afterwards did some gradually do wrong, whereupon the Buddha laid down rules case by case and began to recite the Pātimokkha (the text listing the monastic rules). The text goes on to list the four ways of receiving full ordination, and the names of those whom the Buddha himself ordained with “Come, bhikkhu” (the words the Buddha spoke when ordaining someone), from the first five disciples and the three Kassapa brothers to Sāriputta, Moggallāna and the five hundred Sakyans. Different Accounts
The number of years the Sangha remained without offence differs between sources: the Chinese Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya has five; the Chinese Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya, the Pātimokkha of the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya and the Sapoduo pini piposha have twelve; the Vinaya commentary of the Southern tradition and the Chinese Shanjian lü have twenty.
Dating
The Chinese Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states “five years after the Awakening”; it is placed here for comparison in Year 5 after the Awakening (the Buddha aged thirty-nine), and its order relative to the is unknown. That Vinaya's reckoning has not been converted into “Year N after the Awakening”, and the year is uncertain.
