Year 5 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 39
This year the Buddha is thirty-nine and keeps the in the Hall with the Peaked Roof (a hall with an upper storey) in the Great Wood outside Vesālī. The later commentaries say only that “on one occasion when the Buddha was staying in the Hall with the Peaked Roof” his father King Suddhodana died, and his aunt Mahāpajāpatī went forth soon afterwards, founding the community of ; these events are placed in this year here on the basis of the rains-retreat location. The Chinese Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya also records that the first of the gravest rules was laid down “in the fifth year after becoming a Buddha”, and says that only after five years did monastics gradually begin to commit offences.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, the fifth rains retreat is kept in the Hall with the Peaked Roof in the Great Wood at Vesālī; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing records it as Pishuli, that is, Vesālī.
