Year 17 after the Awakening

The Buddha at 51

This year the Buddha is fifty-one (reckoned from an awakening at thirty-five). According to the given in the later commentaries and the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing, the Buddha keeps the this year at , but neither records what happened during the retreat. Neither the canonical texts nor the later commentaries place any event explicitly in this year.

The Rains Retreat

The rains retreat is kept at Rājagaha; the table of rains retreats in the later commentaries writes “also at Rājagaha”, meaning the same city as in Years 2 to 4. The Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing has Luoyue city, another Chinese rendering of Rājagaha.
