Year 25 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 59
Each year is counted here up to the end of that year's ; this year the Buddha is fifty-nine (reckoned from an awakening at thirty-five) and keeps the retreat at the Jetavana and the Eastern Park at Sāvatthī. Neither the canonical texts nor the later commentaries place any event explicitly in this year: in his later years the Buddha lived for a long time at Sāvatthī, and most discourses from that period record only the place, not which year, so they can only be assigned to the period “Years 21 to 44 after the Awakening” and not to a single year. “Stories that may belong to this year” below lists discourses and stories that may fall in this year, estimated from such conditions as the ages of the people involved.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, in his later years the Buddha makes the Jetavana and the Eastern Park at Sāvatthī his fixed places for the rains retreat, and this year is spent there too; one reading of the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing instead places this year's retreat in the realm of spirits.
