Year 26 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 60
In Year 26 after the Awakening the Buddha is sixty. According to the later commentaries, this year's is at Sāvatthī; from this year on, both readings of the Chinese also place the retreat in the country of Sāvatthī, agreeing with the commentaries. Again there are no events with an explicit year; most texts of the Sāvatthī years record only the place of the teaching, and in which year it was given cannot be known, so these discourses are all gathered under “Texts of the Sāvatthī Years”.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, in his later years the Buddha makes the Jetavana and the Eastern Park at Sāvatthī his fixed places for the rains retreat, and this year is spent there too; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing also says the Buddha kept the rains retreat in the country of Sāvatthī for nineteen years, this year counting as the first of them.
