Year 30 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 64
The Buddha is sixty-four; this year's is at Sāvatthī. The only record that names this year is a later commentary of the , which mentions that a prince of another country was born “in the thirtieth year after the Awakening”; this has nothing to do with the Buddha's own activities and is used here only as a reference for the year. Which discourses the Buddha gave this year likewise cannot be determined, because the discourses of the Sāvatthī years record only the place, not the year; see “Texts of the Sāvatthī years”.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, in his later years the Buddha kept the rains retreat at fixed places in Sāvatthī, the Jeta Grove and the Eastern Park, and this year was spent there too; the Chinese also says the Buddha kept nineteen rains retreats in the country of Sāvatthī, and this year counts as the fifth of them.
