The Buddha at 65
Year 31 after the Awakening, the Buddha sixty-five; the is still at Sāvatthī. There are no events this year with the year stated; the discourses of the Sāvatthī years record only the place and are collected under “Texts of the Sāvatthī years”. In addition, Dhammapāla, a commentator of the , has a scheme that divides the Buddha's forty-five years of teaching into three periods of fifteen years each; on that reckoning the last period begins in this year. The periodization used here takes the first twenty years after the Awakening as one period, and this scheme is noted only as an aside; there is no settled view on which year the late period begins.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, in his later years the Buddha kept the rains retreat at fixed places in Sāvatthī, the Jeta Grove and the Eastern Park, and this year was spent there too; the Chinese also says the Buddha kept nineteen rains retreats in the country of Sāvatthī, and this year counts as the sixth of them.
