Year 37 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 71
Each year is reckoned here as ending with that year's ; this year the Buddha is seventy-one (reckoned from an awakening at thirty-five) and keeps the rains retreat at the Jeta Grove and the Eastern Park at Sāvatthī; neither the canonical texts nor the later commentaries explicitly record any event in this year. The Samantapāsādikā (Shanjian lü) says the Buddha in the eighth year after the accession of Ajātasattu: if a full eight years must elapse before the passing, Ajātasattu's accession falls in this year; here the other reckoning is adopted, counting the year of the passing as the eighth, and the accession is therefore placed in Year 38. Hence, among the “stories that may belong to this year” below, the sutras and stories dated from Year 37 onwards on the grounds that “Ajātasattu was already king” are possible for Year 37 only under that alternative reckoning.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, in his later years the Buddha kept the rains retreat at fixed places in Sāvatthī, the Jeta Grove and the Eastern Park, and this year was spent there too, but there is no year-by-year record of which; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing also says that from Year 26 to Year 44 he kept nineteen consecutive rains retreats in the country of Sāvatthī.
