Year 38 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 72
This year the Buddha is seventy-two (reckoned from an awakening at thirty-five); the is still at the Jeta Grove and the Eastern Park at Sāvatthī. This year gathers the series of events in which Devadatta and Prince Ajātasattu acted together: Devadatta wins the prince's devotion, demands to take over the Sangha and incites the prince to seize the throne; King Bimbisāra abdicates and is killed; Devadatta plots against the Buddha's life and splits the Sangha; finally Sāriputta and Moggallāna (the Buddha's two chief disciples) bring back the who had left. The canonical texts say only that these events took place “in the Buddha's later years”; here they are placed around Year 38 on the basis of the length of Bimbisāra's reign as recorded in the Sri Lankan chronicles, and the other events after Ajātasattu's accession could fall in this year at the earliest.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, in his later years the Buddha kept the rains retreat at fixed places in Sāvatthī, the Jeta Grove and the Eastern Park, and this year was spent there too, but there is no year-by-year record of which; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing also says that from Year 26 to Year 44 he kept nineteen consecutive rains retreats in the country of Sāvatthī.
