The records that the Buddha's fifth was in the Hall with the Peaked Roof in the Great Wood at Vesālī. The table itself lists only places; but the later commentaries say elsewhere that the death of King Suddhodana and the going forth of Mahāpajāpatī both took place while the Buddha was staying in the Hall with the Peaked Roof, and on that basis these two events are also placed in this year here.
Different Accounts
Place: the later commentaries have the Hall with the Peaked Roof in the Great Wood at Vesālī; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing has Pishuli (that is, Vesālī); the Chinese Shi'er you jing records a teaching in the Bamboo Grove in the fifth year, but does not say it was a rains retreat. Taishō Canon
More differences between accounts (1)
The Mahāvaṃsa, the chronicle of the Southern tradition, and other works say that in the fifth year the Buddha stayed at the Jetavana; this does not agree with the table of rains retreats, and is not included in the main text here.
Dating
Year 5 after the Awakening, the Buddha aged thirty-nine, during the rains retreat; the place is given by the later commentaries, and only the year is known.
