A god named Kassapa comes at night to see the Buddha at the Jetavana in Sāvatthī and says: “The World-honoured One has explained what a monastic is, but has not given the instruction for monastics,” and then speaks verses of his own. The later commentaries of the Southern tradition explain that this god, when the Buddha taught the Abhidhamma in the Heaven of the Thirty-three in the seventh year, heard only the explanation of the word “monastic” and not the instruction, and so spoke in this way.
