Year 7 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 41
This year the Buddha is forty-one. According to the later commentaries, the Buddha performs the “Twin Miracle” (a supernormal display in which fire and water issue alternately from his body at the same time) beneath a mango tree outside the city gate of Sāvatthī, defeats the , and then ascends to the Heaven of the Thirty-three (one of the heavens where the gods dwell) to keep the , teaching his mother and the gods. At the end of the retreat the Buddha descends from the Heaven of the Thirty-three to the city of Saṅkassa, where humans and gods gather in a great assembly.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, the seventh rains retreat is kept in the Heaven of the Thirty-three, and the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing likewise says “for his mother's sake, in the seventh year, in the Heaven of the Thirty-three”; the Chinese Shi'er you jing records the seventh year in the country of Juyeni.
