The Vinaya sub-commentary of the Southern tradition, the Mahāvaṃsa and other works say that on the full-moon day of in the eighth year after the Awakening the Buddha went to Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) for the third time; Burmese tradition also has the Buddha going to a certain place in the eighth year. These works are late and do not agree with the table of rains retreats, so they are placed here only in the appendix.
Different Accounts
None of these accounts is included in the main text; the Mahāvaṃsa also says the Buddha stayed at the Jetavana this year.
Dating
These works say Year 8 after the Awakening (the Buddha aged forty-two); the year is given by late works and does not agree with the table of rains retreats, so it is not adopted here, and the year is uncertain.
