Year 8 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 42
This year the Buddha is forty-two and, according to the later commentaries, keeps the in the Bhesakaḷā Grove near Crocodile Hill in the country of the Bhaggas (a country of ancient India). Neither the canonical texts nor the later commentaries place any teaching or conversion explicitly in this year; the Buddha gave a good many discourses on Crocodile Hill, for example his meetings with Nakula's parents (a lay couple), but none of them is dated.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, the eighth rains retreat is kept in the Bhesakaḷā Grove near Crocodile Hill in the country of the Bhaggas (in Chinese also rendered as the Deer Park of the Fearful Grove); the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing records it as the realm of spirits, and the Chinese Shi'er you jing has the eighth year on Willow Mountain.
