Year 2 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 36
Year 2 after the Awakening begins when the first ends; the Buddha is thirty-six. Before the rains this year the Buddha returns from Bārāṇasī to Uruvelā and converts the three Kassapa brothers, who worship the fire god, together with their thousand disciples; he then goes to Rājagaha, the capital of Magadha, where King Bimbisāra and donates the Bamboo Grove, and Sāriputta and Moggallāna (later the Buddha's two chief disciples) also go forth at this time. In the rainy season the Buddha keeps the second rains retreat in the Bamboo Grove at Rājagaha.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, the second rains retreat is kept in the Bamboo Grove at Rājagaha (another commentary calls it the Great Monastery of the Bamboo Grove); the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing records it as Lingjiuding Hill, that is, Vulture Peak outside Rājagaha.
