Year 3 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 37
This year the Buddha is thirty-seven and, according to the later commentaries, still keeps the at Rājagaha. Neither the canonical texts nor the later commentaries explicitly place any teaching or conversion in this year; the only entries for this year are the record for the third year in the Chinese Shi'er you jing and the place of the rains retreat. The section “stories that may belong to this year” below lists sutras that may fall in this year, estimated from such conditions as the people and places involved.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, the third rains retreat is again kept in the Bamboo Grove at Rājagaha; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing records it as Lingjiuding Hill, that is, Vulture Peak outside Rājagaha.
