Year 1 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 35
This year runs from the Buddha's awakening beneath the Bodhi tree to the end of the first . The Buddha is thirty-five (all ages are reckoned from an awakening at thirty-five). In the first half of the year the Buddha sits in meditation beneath trees around Uruvelā and, after entreats him, decides to teach. In the second half he gives his first sermon in the Deer Park outside Bārāṇasī; the first appear, followed by the first male and female .
The Rains Retreat
The rains retreat is kept at Isipatana, the Deer Park, at Bārāṇasī. The place is named explicitly only in later commentaries; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing (Collection of Saṅgharakṣa) also records it as the “place where the Wheel of Dhamma was turned” in the country of Bārāṇasī, that is, the place of the Buddha's first sermon.
