In Year 22 after the Awakening the Buddha is fifty-six; according to the later commentaries this year's is again at Sāvatthī. Neither the canonical texts nor the later commentaries place any event explicitly in this year. The texts of the Sāvatthī years usually say where the Buddha was and to whom he taught, but not which year, so these discourses are not assigned to years and are gathered under “Texts of the Sāvatthī Years”.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, in his later years the Buddha makes the Jetavana and the Eastern Park at Sāvatthī his fixed places for the rains retreat, and this year is spent there too; one reading of the Chinese instead places this year's retreat in the , the first of four successive retreats there.
