Year 44 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 78
Each year is reckoned here as ending with that year's ; this year the Buddha is seventy-eight (reckoned from an awakening at thirty-five) and keeps the rains retreat at the Jeta Grove and the Eastern Park at Sāvatthī. Neither the canonical texts nor the later commentaries explicitly record any event in this year: in his later years the Buddha lived at Sāvatthī for many years, and most discourses from that period give only the place and not the year, so they can only be assigned to the period “Years 21 to 44 after the Awakening”. This is the Buddha's last rains retreat at Sāvatthī; the next year is the final journey. On the view that Yasodharā was born on the same day as the Buddha, her at seventy-eight is placed here in this year. The “stories that may belong to this year” below list the sutras and stories that may fall in this year, estimated from conditions such as the reign of Ajātasattu, the opposition of Devadatta to the Buddha, and mention of “eighty years of age” in the texts.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, in his later years the Buddha kept the rains retreat at fixed places in Sāvatthī, the Jeta Grove and the Eastern Park, and this year was spent there too, but there is no year-by-year record of which; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing also says that from Year 26 to Year 44 he kept nineteen consecutive rains retreats in the country of Sāvatthī. On another reading of this text, this year was the last rains retreat, recorded at the village of Pijiang in the Vajjian country (the country around Vesālī, that is, Vajji).
