The Buddha at 49
This year the Buddha is forty-nine (reckoned from an awakening at thirty-five). According to the given in the later commentaries and the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing, the Buddha returns this year to his home town of Kapilavatthu for the , but neither records what happened during the retreat. Neither the canonical texts nor the later commentaries place any event explicitly in this year; this year also lists a group of discourses and rules that state explicitly that the Buddha was keeping the rains retreat at Kapilavatthu but give no year, as events that may belong to this year.
The Rains Retreat
The rains retreat is kept at Kapilavatthu; the table of rains retreats in the later commentaries has the great city of Kapilavatthu, and the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing has the Sakyan village in the country of Kapilavatthu, meaning the same place. Another later commentary of the says the Buddha kept the rains retreat in the Banyan Park at Kapilavatthu only once, but does not say which year.
