This year the Buddha is forty-three and keeps the rains retreat at Kosambī . The main event of the year is the quarrel at Kosambī, where the monastics split into two factions and would not stop; the Buddha tried again and again to dissuade them without success, and finally left alone. The Vinaya texts themselves give no year; here, following the order of the rains-retreat places, it is placed between Year 9 and the rainy season of Year 10.
The Rains Retreat According to the later commentaries, the ninth rains retreat is kept at Kosambī; the table of rains retreats records only the name of the city. The Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing has the country of Jushanpi (that is, Kosambī), and the Chinese Shi'er you jing has the ninth year in the Foul Marsh.
