Year 12 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 46
This year the Buddha is forty-six (reckoning from an awakening at thirty-five). At the invitation of a brahmin of Verañjā (a town of ancient India; a brahmin is a member of the priestly class that conducted the rituals of ancient India), the Buddha keeps the there with five hundred , and happens upon a famine; for three months they live on the horses' barley given by horse traders. During this period Sāriputta asks the Buddha to lay down rules, and the Buddha says the time has not yet come. After the retreat the Buddha takes leave of the brahmin, accepts his offering, and goes by way of Bārāṇasī to Vesālī; Sudinna of Kalanda village goes forth at this time.
The Rains Retreat
The rains retreat is kept at Verañjā; that Year 12 was spent here is stated explicitly in the given in the later commentaries, and the Vinaya texts of the various schools all record the Buddha keeping a rains retreat at Verañjā by invitation, but give no year. The Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing records it as a secluded place in Magadha.
