Year 6 after the Awakening
The Buddha at 40
This year the Buddha is forty and keeps the on Mount Makula. The main event of the year is that the wealthy merchant Anāthapiṇḍika of Sāvatthī meets the Buddha at Rājagaha and , then returns to Sāvatthī, buys the park of Prince Jeta and builds the Jetavana monastery; the only year number for this event in the canonical texts is the sixth year recorded in the Chinese Shi'er you jing. The Chinese Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya also places the second to fourth of the gravest rules in “the sixth year after becoming a Buddha”; and several Buddha biographies place the Buddha's first return to his home town of Kapilavatthu in the sixth year, so this year is one of the candidate years for that event.
The Rains Retreat
According to the later commentaries, the sixth rains retreat is kept on Mount Makula; the Chinese Sengqieluocha suoji jing likewise has Mount Makula.
